The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that consumers who are considering a Reverse Mortgage need to first seek an appointment with an agency that has been duly certified by them.

CONSUMER is a HUD-certified housing counseling agency that provides Reverse Mortgage advice.  We have duly certified counselors who can assist you in this process.

This service is exclusively geared for homeowners who are at least 62 years old, who use this property as their main residence, and who have paid off their mortgage or have a relatively low balance on their mortgage.

During the meeting the counselor will define the Reverse Mortgage concept, explain its pros and cons, its tax implications, its repercussions for your heirs, your payout options, related costs, as well as its alternatives. Our counselors will not prequalify you, are not mortgage lenders nor financial advisers, so they will not share recommendations about how to invest your money.  The role of the counselor is to help you understand what a Reverse Mortgage really is and to provide you with alternatives that will enable you to take a well-thought-out decision.

At the conclusion of the session, the counselor will issue a certificate. You must hand over this document to your mortgage lender if you decide to continue the process. The certificate does not bind you and is valid for 180 days. You must receive counseling once again if your certificate expires prior to closing.
